AstroShed reviewed the ToupTek ATR585C (IMX585C) cooled astro imaging camera, covering packaging, setup, cooling, technical specifications, usability, and field imaging performance.
The camera arrived well packaged in a strong cardboard box. Inside were the camera, a dedicated 12 V power supply, a USB 3 cable, a 16.5 mm spacer, and two M42 front plates for different back-focus distances.
Setup with N.I.N.A.
AstroShed set up the ATR585C with N.I.N.A. using both the native ToupTek driver and the supplied ASCOM driver. The native driver exposed more camera controls in N.I.N.A., and the camera was ready after connecting it to the PC and opening the software.

Cooling and Driver Notes
In AstroShed's test, cooling to -10 C was a little slow but held within +/- 0.1 C. The reviewed model did not reach the stated -45 C below ambient cooling target in that test. The sensor window heater was left at the default setting of 2 and appeared to work as expected.
The review used driver version 20230925. After updating to the latest native driver, cooling efficiency for ATR series deep-sky cameras can be further improved.
Imaging Modes and Connection Options
The ATR585C includes several imaging modes, including HDR mode. At the time of the review, that HDR mode was still being refined through firmware updates. AstroShed used High Gain mode and unity gain settings as a practical balance of sensitivity and dynamic range.
The camera supports two connection distances: 17.5 mm sensor-to-front distance, and 12.5 mm when extra space is needed for filter drawers or off-axis guiders.
The camera was found immediately in N.I.N.A., and its settings were visible without separate software or driver installation. The two-port USB 2.0 hub on the back worked as expected for devices that do not require much power or already have their own power supply.

Performance Notes
The IMX585 sensor is highlighted in the review for high sensitivity, low noise, and zero amp glow. The 2.9 um pixel size supports high-resolution imaging for detailed astrophotography.
As a color camera, the IMX585C provides color imaging without separate filters and monochrome stacking, making it suitable for beginner to intermediate astrophotographers who want detailed color images with less post-processing.
The ability to capture up to 47 frames per second at full resolution is useful for planetary imaging and transient events, while 16-bit mode can help capture subtle details in deep-sky images.
Usability
The review notes compatibility with ToupTek Astro software, SharpCap, FireCapture, N.I.N.A., SGP, APT, and software that uses ASCOM drivers. The compact, lightweight body and USB 3.0 interface simplify mounting and data transfer.
AstroShed found the setup straightforward. The camera was used with a long focal length SCT for small galaxies and faint targets, and with a longer refractor for small planetary nebulae.
Pros and Cons
Pros: high sensitivity and low noise, zero amp glow, accurate TEC cooling, color fidelity, high resolution with small pixels, good frame rate for planetary imaging, wide exposure range, competitive pricing, and simple setup with imaging software.
Cons: as a color camera, it may not match the flexibility and ultimate detail of monochrome cameras with filters for advanced users.

AstroShed concludes that the ToupTek ATR585C astro imaging camera is a versatile tool for amateur and intermediate astrophotographers, with a combination of sensitivity, low noise, simple setup, and value for deep-sky and planetary imaging.
